“Robyn” Hood: Modern Medieval Movement

Yesterday, a friend commented on my inclusion of a pair of brown Calvin Klein ankle boots in the Taste of Neapolitan buyer’s guide on Kazowie, describing the booties as “Robin Hood-esque.” (I wasn’t lying in my Tim Burton-esque guide when I said that my friends and I love “-esque”).

Key “Robyn” Hood trimmings include anything leathery and feathery. I’ve replaced the green feathered cap with a two-tone brown fedora and swapped the cuffed knee-high boots for some slouchy leather ankle booties. If wearing more than a few “Robyn” Hood pieces at a time, I’d skip the tights to avoid medieval man overload.

Dress Like Ice Cream!

One often sees cream and brown paired together, or cream and pink, or sometimes even pink and brown, but it’s pretty unusual to see cream, brown, and pink all worn together. The neapolitan ice cream I ate yesterday inspired me to create A Taste of Neapolitan, a Kazowie buyer’s guide featuring only vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry-colored clothing. The flavors taste and look so good together!

Something about this trio of colors make me think cozy, relaxed, and sweet, so my guide features some brown True Religion cords and a cream cable knit cardigan by Stella McCartney, among other sweet treats. I think it would be adorable to wear head-to-toe neapolitan, so I picked some items from my guide that I think would look cute if worn together. Check it:

Neapolitan: yay or nay?

Metallic Panache

When I read that Prada and Marc Jacobs incorporated metallic into their Spring 2009 lines, I immediately thought, ‘didn’t the metallic trend already come and go?’ When I saw that the designers mixed metallics with bright colors and sequins, however, I quickly changed my mind. Metallic’s in. And I actually like it! The complete opposite of pastels, metallics are a fresh new take on the bright colors of the season. It works for me. What do you think about metallics in Spring? Check out my Metallic Dresses, Purses, and Shoes shopper’s guides on Kazowie and leave a comment below!!

Cartoon Diamonds: Corny or Cute?

If you thought the Simmons Hello Kitty jewelry line was pushing the limits on taste, get ready for what the company has in store for this coming Fall! Nikelodeon/Viacom Consumer Products has partnered with Simmons Jewelry Co. to create a SpongeBob SquarePants-inspired designer jewelry line, which will include pieces in gold, silver, and enamel that will sell for anywhere between $150 and $75,000.

Would you sport jewelry from the new SpongeBob line? Vote now on Kazowie.com!

Hello Kitty’s cute. Maybe even too cute. And while SpongeBob SquarePants might be the star of one of the longest running Nicktoons on TV, he’s not the most attractive looking sea creature I’ve seen. I have personally just recently become a fan of the Hello Kitty line after seeing Angela Simmons sporting a rather large diamond Kitty necklace on Run’s House. The jewelry definitely looks better when worn. If only I could scrounge up the mere $25,000 it would cost to purchase a necklace like that of my own.

Coraline Movie Fashion

Last night, I paid a whopping $12.75 to see Henry Selick’s stop motion movie, Coraline. (He also directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, another Tim Burton production). The animation was crazy and very visually stimulating (a.k.a. trippy and colorful to the max). And it was in 3-D, which made everything that much cooler. Once I got over the facts that I paid over $10 for a movie and that Dakota Fanning was the voice of Coraline, I was actually able to enjoy my experience at the theater.

Coraline’s adorable outfits were all handmade and looked like real clothes that a real kid would wear. I couldn’t help thinking that she and her pal, Wybie would be really fun characters to dress up as for next Halloween. I also began pondering how Coraline’s fashion could be translated to real-life womens’ outfits. With the movie still fresh in my mind, I created a Dress Like Coraline buyer’s guide, which includes clothes and accessories similiar to those Coraline sports in the movie. Don’t forget the blue hair and dragonfly barrette! P.S. I recommend seeing Coraline while it’s still in 3-D at the theater. I don’t think it will be the same to watch at home.

My Own Spring Trend

I often like to go back through the Kazowie.com shopper’s guides I’ve turned out in the past to see if my taste in clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories has remained consistent. For the most part, one can tell that all the products on my various guides were hand-picked by the same person. (See: Foxy Fringe, Hot Headbands, and Tie Dye Mania!). Of course, there’s always the occasional powder pink Burberry checked scarf that has me wondering what I was thinking that day. (a.k.a. I should have had that extra cup of coffee!)

Looking through my old lists today, I was inspired to combine the trends of two unrelated guides that I created, Pretty Black Jewelry and Springtime Fresh Nail Polish, and create a cool look for Spring that I’m definitely going to try. Gothy/funky/punky black jewelry paired with girly/chalky/pastely Easter egg nails? I think it’s a pretty interesting and unexpected combo.

Been there, done that? How did it go? I haven’t tried it yet, so I’ll let you know how it works out for me.

Two Things I Wish I Had Today…

I normally take public transportation downtown and then walk about 20 minutes to work. I always wear tennies and a sweatshirt. Today, however, I stepped out of my house clad in Steve Madden leather ankle boots and my bright blue down puffy jacket (vintage J.Lo, circa 2003) to shield me from the cold. It wasn’t raining when I left, so I figured I’d be fine for the walk.

I was wrong.

Since the jacket was way too hot to wear zipped while city-walking, and the too-big, faux-fur trimmed hood completely obstructs all vision, I stomped to the office, jacket unzipped and no hood on my head to shield me from the elements and save my up-do. One man, who happened to be holding the biggest umbrella I’ve ever seen IN MY LIFE, smiled at me as I eyed his colossal rain-roof while trying not to slip. He must have felt guilty.

I arrived to work, soaked with rain and sweat, my hair dripping, boots and purse spotted with droplets. I was sporting the “wet look” from head to toe, and it was not cute.

Two things I wish I had today: an Uplifting Umbrella and some Groovy Golashes.

Conversation Pieces

I’ve been amassing a list of truly wacky things that I’ve found online for the past few months: cool inventions, interesting wearables, unique art pieces and gadgets. Basically things that would force a conversation. I’ve been increasingly finding cool websites that specialize in this stuff. One of them that I adore is The A + R Store based out of Los Angeles. They carry all kinds of things for cooking, playing, reading, sleeping and everything in between. I especially love the Eco-Plastic Necklace, made from recycled materials, the Folding Picnic Set (always be prepared for an impromptu picnic), and the Rollerskate Paperweight/Door Stop/Bookend is a clever idea that totally takes me back to Skate City.

As far as some interesting inventions that I’ve found, Clocky is one of the smartest things that I’ve yet to see. It’s an alarm clock that, when prompted to wake you up, rolls off of your nightstand table and finds a hiding place while making obnoxious noises until you get your butt out of bed to find it and turn it off.  it gets you out of bed, right??  Another genius invention is the Anti-Theft Lunch Bags, designed to deter those obnoxious co-workers and bullies at school from stealing your sandwich. There’s also the USB Powered Heated Gloves for those freezing offices.

Some cool decorative things that I’ve found are: The Dandelion Urban Gnome-for your mantel or your garden,  the Ghost Clock, a modern interpretation of a classic style, and The Carlos Night Light (who wouldn’t want a little chihuahua to help you feel safe in the night).

Check my giant list of other interesting finds: Conversation Pieces.

Spring Trends. What Do You Think?

I was reading my favorite fashion mag this past weekend to get pumped for some warm-weather fashion. Now, it’s common knowledge that trends and styles get recycled every year, but I discovered a few Spring trends that I’m tads skeptical about for ‘09. I’ve enumerated 3 of them, below:

Asymmetric. A fad that I could never understand. I suppose it looks good on some, but I was ready to say adios to that trend last year. Why won’t one-shoulder tops and dresses go away already?!

Straw hats.  I’m not talking enormous, floppy beach hats, a la’ Samantha Jones in the S.A.T.C. movie, which I love but would have NO room in my closet for, I’m talking Marry Poppins-esque crushed straw hats. If your style is quirky enough to pull it off, I’d say go for it. Personally, I think they’re DARLING on the catwalk… so they should probably just stay there.

Jumpsuits. Not sure where and when a jumpsuit would be an appropriate outfit choice. But I must admit, I’m sort of curious to try one on. I have a funny feeling that it would only look good if I had Giselle Bundchen legs and a Niki Taylor torso. But, you never know! Fashion is about trying new things and seeing what you can get away with. So I say, if you like it, wear it. But whatever you do, please don’t top off your asymmetrical jumpsuit with a crushed straw hat!

Pretty Pink Picks!

In honor of the upcoming holiday, I have painted my nails neon pink and have gone shopping online for all things pink. I find that people either love or hate the color pink. I personally wish I owned more pink stuff. It doesn’t get much better than a pink blow dryer and you can’t feel more pretty and feminine in any other color!

Check out my Think Pink buyer’s guide in Kazowie to see my ultra-fem/punk pink picks and let me know what YOU think of pink!
